5-Yard Numerals

LSU has used 5-yard numerals ON field since 1946, according to LSU, "In 1945, the field’s yard lines were identified every 5 yards with small “A-frame” signs outside of the boundary; in 1940 and 1941, there were photos of numbers painted outside the field boundary every 5 yards – published by The Morning Advocate in Baton Rouge (see Nov. 10, 1940, page 1-A; Nov. 16, 1941, page 8-B and 11-B).

The SID in 1946, Jim Corbett decided to have numerals painted on the field in Tiger Stadium every 5 yards at the request of radio play-by-play announcer John Ferguson 1946.
